The Power of the Pause
In today’s hustle culture, when someone asks, “How are you?” the most common
response is: “Busy.” We’re overextended, constantly multitasking, and often measuring
our value by our output. Whether it’s the pressure to keep up or the drive to do it all,
burnout is real—and rising. But what if the key to better productivity and mental clarity
wasn’t working more… but pausing more?
Before becoming an entrepreneur, I worked in banking, where skipping lunch was a
badge of honor. As a manager of a growing banking center, I often powered through
lunch, priding myself on my commitment. But one day, as I encouraged an employee to
take a break and recharge, I felt that familiar nudge—the reminder to practice what I
preached.
The truth is: we all need to hit the reset button—regularly. The belief that we’re more
productive by pushing through without pause is a myth. We’re not superhuman. Our
bodies and minds need rest, hydration, and nourishment to function at their best.
Research backs it up. Studies show that working through lunch consistently can reduce
productivity by as much as 78%. According to a survey conducted by Right Management,
fewer than 20% of American workers regularly take a lunch break away from their desks.
In fact, 39% of those who do eat lunch still eat at their desks.
Here Are a Few Tips That Help Me Protect My Midday
Reset:
- Pack your lunch. It saves time and money—and keeps you from defaulting to
unhealthy or rushed options. - Schedule your break. Don’t wait for a magical window to appear. Block off 20–30
minutes on your calendar. Make a lunch date with yourself. - Fuel your mind. Catch up on motivational or personal development material while
you eat. Stay inspired without working. - Eat something energizing. Choose light, healthy options that won’t leave you
sluggish. - Repeat daily. Protecting this habit is key to long-term wellness and productivity.
Feel better. Be more productive. Your lunch break isn’t a luxury—it’s essential.
Much success to you!
